following the premiere of a World Sailing Championship for the Micro Cupper class in Berlin hosted by the SC Gothia at the Wannsee in 2014, now the Müggelsee in the southeast of Berlin will be hosting the first intercontinential championship after almost one hundred years of regatta culture.
The Open European Championship of the Soling class will take place from 12th to 19th of September this year. The Yachtclub Berlin-Grünau (YCBG) will be hosting the event at Müggelseedamm 72 in Friedrichshagen. The organizer is expecting twentyfive boats from Austria, Hungary, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, USA, Ukraine and Germany.
Norwegian Jan Linge designed the three-man keelboat in the sixties. It is 8.20m long, weights 1035kg and possesses an upwind sail area of 24.3m², while the Spinnaker is no larger than 45m². The Soling class was an Olympic boat class from 1972 to 2000.
There is no sailing club that achieved more international success in this class than todays Yachtclub Berlin-Grünau. The club of exceptional german sailor Jochen Schümann has four Olympic medals, twelve World Championship medals and 32 European Championship medals to its name. Besides the three times Olympic winner Jochen Schümann and his crew Thomas Flach/Bernd Jäkel and Gunnar Bahr/Ingo Borkowski, Dieter Below, Roland Schwarz, Helmar Nauck, Jörg Herrmann and Wolf-Eberhard Richter and their crews shaped the Olympic Soling class internationally.
The YCBG considers the assignment of the European Championship of the Soling class in the 50th year of its existence as both recognition and as an honor.
Also, Jochen Schümann has announced his participation in the races at his home territory. Despite a tight international schedule the two times Olympic Gold medallist, one time Olympic Silver medallist, six times World Championship medallist and sixteen times European Championship medallist will return to his former class at this occasion. With his successful crew Thomas Flach (olympic gold at Pusan 1988 and Savannah 1996) and Ingo Borkowski (olympic silver at Sydney in 2000) he is willing to build on past successes at the first time European Championship sailing area Müggelsee. He will meet many old opponents as well as defending European Champion Uwe Steingross of TSG 1898 from Berlin-Schmöckwitz and fellow YCBG sailor Roman Koch who came second at the Masters World Championship in 2014. Other well-known names along the favourites are Hungarian Georg Wossalla, Bavarian Karl Haist and Hendrik Witzmann who will be sailing for the United Arab Emirates.
Accompanying ships for spectators will depart from the YCBG at set times. There are also boats reserved for press. As long as individual wishes of reporters are in accordance to the racing rules, they will be met. The media representatives may please organise weatherproof and water-resistant clothes by themselves.
